頹垣敗瓦的上色照片 ── 二次大戰後的馬尼拉

二次大戰時,馬尼拉曾被大日本帝國陸軍佔領。經過一個月的戰役,美軍及菲律賓遊擊隊成功於1945年上半年解放菲律賓首都。由於遭受激烈的戰鬥及轟炸,馬尼拉成為二次大戰中受損程度第二嚴重的盟國首都(僅次於波蘭首都華沙)。

為紀念戰爭70週年,菲律賓政府於2015年建立了一個網上平台 [2]發佈了大量照片 [3]、短片、文章、地圖、證詞及其他有關這場歷史性戰役的報告 [4]。這一系列的收藏亦包括一些上色照片 [1],展示了馬尼拉昔日的代表性建築及戰爭場面。

馬尼拉戰役中,有超過十萬名平民被殺害,而市內的政府大樓亦幾乎被全面摧毀。政府概要 [5]總結了首都馬尼拉的戰後狀況:

十萬名菲律賓平民喪生,政府大樓變成一片頹垣敗瓦,馬尼拉不再是東方之珠了。這曾經是一個著名的城市及東方首個匯聚東西文化的國際大都會,現已消失於一片碎瓦中。

馬尼拉的歐式遺產(菲律賓曾是西班牙的殖民地,被統治超過3百年)亦因城市被戰火破壞而遺失。政府概要補充:

人民再也無法傳頌他們寶貴的文化及作為國民的身份認同。政府大樓、大學及學院、教堂及其他組織的地標等都與他們的貴重物品一同被毀滅。為了未來的發展,多棟建築物被拆毀。這意味着要捨棄歐式建築,取而代之興建了著重功能性的美式建築,變成了今天的建築藍圖。只有少部分的雄偉建築是完整無缺的。
